We happened to meet Matt Barnes seven years ago when we left our home of 28 years to move to Big Canoe. There were many builders from which to choose, and we had met with a few, but the first time we met Matt, we knew immediately that he would be building our home. We had heard from others about the process of building a new home, and the difficulties and frustration that is part of the process. When we began our build, we realized that Matt and his team were not just any builders. They were in a class by themselves. Our building experience was phenomenal! After four years in Big Canoe, we decided we wanted more land. Matt knew of some available land, and the rest is history. He first built us a barn with an apartment to live in during the house construction. He then proceeded to build our new forever home. Using his creativity and expertise, he once more built us the home of our dreams. Matt, Dani, Victoria, James, Devon and Parker were all amazing to work with on our build. Just as with the first house, and barn and apartment, they gave attention to details, and are all magnificent at their jobs. “What I consider a “Godincidence” occurred when we decided to build in Big Canoe in August of 2020. We had already signed a contract with a builder, but he suddenly decided to get out of the house-building business right before our build was to begin. Feeling a little stunned, we were introduced to Matt Barnes of Canoe Custom Homes, who would be taking over our build. Matt was immediately 100% attentive to our situation by spending one-on-one time with us as we told him our wishes and desires for our retirement home, answering many questions, negotiating the terms of a new contract, and making us feel comfortable with him as our new builder.
Mind you, Matt and his team on our house (including Parker, Olivia, and Danielle) were building our home during a pandemic! Although unknown to all of us at the time, this meant price escalation of materials (especially lumber and steel), supply chain delays, labor issues, and a LOT of headaches for Matt, who otherwise always took great pains to keep things on a well-oiled path. Matt and Parker are meticulous and organized when it comes to scheduling and all details of a build.
During what can only be described as a maddening and frustrating building period for them due to the pandemic, Matt and Parker protected us from most of those headaches and just got it done. Their knowledge of every iota of the process, their guidance during decision-making, and their attention to detail produced the most beautiful home we could hope or dream for – our Cabin in Bearadise – in one of the most beautiful communities anywhere. Matt and Parker literally treated our build like it was their own, which is a rare find these days.
The bottom line is Phil and I highly recommend Canoe Custom Homes to anyone looking to build their dream home. If you can just be responsive when they need feedback from you, you can just sit back and watch the magic happen. And don’t be surprised when you feel they have become “family” by the time it’s done!”

Our project was a hybrid of new construction and a remodel. The project was technically very challenging because of the sloping terrain as well as having to connect the new structure to an existing home. CCH worked seamlessly with the POA and they were always attentive to our neighbors during the construction. Their attention to detail, especially during the final interior trim phase, was great to see (special thanks to Matt Garrett).
